Boeing has secured the U.S. Navy's F/A-XX programme, a decision that gives the aerospace manufacturer responsibility for sixth-generation fighter aircraft across all U.S. military service branches.

The Navy aircraft remains largely undisclosed. Beyond confirmation that the programme exists, public information is limited to a small number of indistinct artist renderings, according to reporting by Jalopnik.

That limited disclosure leaves key questions unanswered, including the aircraft's final configuration, capabilities and production timetable. The F/A-XX is intended to be the Navy's next-generation fighter programme, but officials have released few details about the platform.

For European observers, the award underlines the continuing pace of military aviation development in the United States, even as most technical elements of the new aircraft remain outside the public domain.
