Tesla is adding vehicle-to-home, or V2H, charging capability to its two highest-volume electric models: the Model 3 and Model Y. The change allows the vehicles' battery systems to support home backup power through Tesla's PowerShare system.
According to a report by Car and Driver, the capability arrives as part of a rolling change to the inverter used in the two EVs. The inverter is a key component in managing the flow of electricity between a vehicle battery and external equipment.
A more useful battery when parked
V2H technology can make an electric car battery available as a reserve energy source for a home, rather than using it solely for driving. For Model 3 and Model Y owners, the update marks Tesla's move to extend bidirectional charging beyond a more limited set of vehicles.
Drivers in Lithuania interested in home backup should follow Tesla's local information on availability and supported PowerShare equipment. The feature's practical value will depend on how and when the system is offered in individual markets and homes.
